Visual reference

My final idea of the interactive installation is to make several scales which each one represent a controversy of the social topic, Tomorrow Vision.

The visual style is like the change of the linear pattern, something simple but playful. There are no standard answer for each ratio in each scales. In fact, the idea of using the scale is to weight the object to archive balance. Therefore, the hidden interpretation of my work is to find a balance. No matter how many controversy we are facing, our goal is to reach the point to fulfil most parties' rights.

The work xA Million Times at Changi is both a kinetic sculpture and functioning clock created by Stockholm-based artists´ collective Humans since 1982. Its visualisation matches much with my imagination. The colour is simple and sharp, a white background with black lines.

However, the difference is the manipulation of the visual. The direction of the scales is controlled by the audience while people can add or remove the weight from the scale to express their standpoints. As a result, the artwork keeps changing according to the public choice.

Phoebe Man’s work “One Pyeong of Golden Bricks” and "Erosion of Home 3" inspired me with the presentation of the housing problem in Hong Kong. Im her work , she always use brick to represent housing and use text to show the message and the issue.

While my work contains a lot message about the controversy, the most direct way to present the idea should be text. Therefore, the controversy of each scale will be written on the side of the scales.

On the other side, it also inspired me of the design of the scales. Will it be a more explicit simplifier if I simulate the container of the scales to be a transparent brick? To build a wall and to make the brick consolidate, it has to be in balance.

More, the design of the scales will be totally different. The stripe like scales no longer be a monochrome line but a simulation of a scaffolding with transparent brick on top as a container of the weight.

The idea is still under consideration because the visual style will change and I prefer simplification. To apply the second design, how to make it will be a concern because the scaffolding is a cylinder but not a flat surface. How can I hold the transparent acrylic box on top of the wood simulating the bamboo? So, the final design will keep as a monochrome black scales in linear pattern mounted on the white wall.
